Lean Construction in the Execution

Lean construction methods have been applied since 1991 in the construction area. Besides well-known methods to identify and erase waste the best-known methods used is the Last Planner System. This production-, planning- and controlling instrument unfolds its whole potential especially in fast and complex projects.

The whole knowledge of everyone involved in the construction process makes it possible to finish projects on average 20% faster, reduce waste and rework in favour of better quality and also to lower the accident rate on sites by up to 50%.

The participants learn

  • That Lean Construction doesn’t mean working harder but working smarter
  • Which methods are used and when in the lean management process on site
  • What it means to plan and control a project using lean methods, to recognize and eliminate obstacles in advance and so achieve an interference-free construction process
  • The participants will be put in the position to measure the quality of their own scheduling and controlling, to spot bottlenecks and to continuously improve themselves.

They also get the opportunity to apply the gained knowledge:

  • Commitment management simulation to provide a stable construction process
  • Support of the knowledge transfer between specialists to optimise the whole project

 Content

Part 1: Current challenges in scheduling

  • Practice about the main problem of today’s project controlling
  • Development of Lean Construction since 1991
  • Simulation Part 1 to illustrate present construction processes

Part 2: Lean methods for scheduling and controlling

  • Pull planning with the know-how of the executors
  • Forecast planning to enable systematical preparation of the work
  • Week-planning and commitments as the core features of the production system
  • Simulation Part 2: Use of lean methods and subsequent evaluation of improvements

Part 3: Interaction of the methods for production planning and –controlling

  • Meeting atmosphere and team building
  • Methodical approach to continuously improve the production system
  • Systematical Screening of working packages to provide an obstacle-free implementation

Target audience

Project controller, developers, general contractors and project managers, calculators, site managers and foremen.

Approach

The theoretical portion of the training is reinforced by practical simulations and group discussions. The workshop can be rather held as a public course or as an in-house training.

Public workshops provide the opportunity to meet other members of the „Lean Construction community“ and talk about revolutionary developments in the construction industry.

The advantage of in-house trainings is that the content can be adopted to the company’s specific needs. This helps to transfer the theoretical methods into practical tasks and concrete implications.
